Get the flowers into water immediately

Dehydration of flowers is an instant process. As soon as they are out of the water, they will start losing water, and in no time they will become lifeless. This is how flowers behave. To replenish them with freshness, dip them in a vase full water as soon as possible, without wasting a lot of time. but it is optimum if you use warm water to put your flowers in. flowers find warm water easier to absorb as compared to hot or cold water.

Just like the human body temperature, flowers also stay hydrated the best at around 37 degree Celsius or 99 degrees Fahrenheit. Anything warmer is easier to absorb by us and so is the case with flowers. They find warm water more hydrating which also helps them bloom and open up even more efficiently.

Remember to change the water

It is extremely important to change the water of the vase constantly, at least once every two days. Doing this is necessary to prevent any bacterial growth which can reduce the life of your flowers and make them rot quicker than normal.

Also, when flowers are properly hydrated, you can change the temperature of the water to a cooler one as flowers love to stay in a cooler environment. This will also help in keeping the flowers in the best possible condition.

Flower preservatives will help increase longevity

You might be wondering what a flower preservative is. As the name suggests, these additives help preserve flowers till the longest of time. Flower preservatives are mainly made up of mainly two things – carbohydrates and anti-bacterial agents.

Carbohydrates act as food for flowers, just like they do for us. When flowers are properly nourished, the bud also blooms to its complete capacity. And the anti-bacterial agent inhibits the growth of any form of bacteria in the water. This helps the flowers stay and look fresh for longer. Water that is filled with bacteria creates a poor environment for flowers to stay in, deteriorating their health which causes wilting. Growth of bacteria gives rise to a lot of unpleasant odour and discolouration of water too.

A preservative is a great additive to protect your flowers. But if you cannot find any, a great alternative is adding a few drops of bleach. They will act in a similar way like the preservative.

Pruning is the key

Pruning refers to the act of removing excess leaves from flowers. Leaves that are below the waterline must be removed at any cost. When these leaves get into the water, the rotting process starts. The longer the leaves stay in the water, the faster is the deterioration of the overall flower. This is why each stem is pruned, which means that the leaves below the waterline are removed.

When you get a bouquet that is designed by a professional, these leaves are already removed by them. but even if you buy loose flowers, you can remove those leaves by yourself. Keep checking the vase for any fallen leaves or petals and keep removing them daily.

Another important step along with pruning is cutting off the stem from the bottom. Cut around 2 to 3 cm of the stem from the bottom in a slant manner. This helps the flower intake more water than the usual straight cut. Re-cut the stem every 2 to 3 days or every time you are changing the water.

Keep flowers away from fruits

Like flowers, fruits keep on ageing too. But as fruits age, they release ethylene gas which does not work well with flowers. It speeds up the drying process in flowers. This is why fruits and flowers should be kept in separate corners of a home.

These are some basic steps that do not require a lot of effort by you. It can be done by anyone and everyone easily, and it will help your flowers stay fresh for strong.
