Karwa Chauth Fasting

It is the time of the year when Hindu women prepare themselves for a day-long sacred Karwa Chauth fasting, which will be observed on 10th October this year. Women in India and abroad follow the tradition of Karwa Chauth fasting from the bottom of their hearts. Karwa Chauth fasting is the most significant festival amongst Hindus women since they fast from sunrise to moonrise to safeguard and encourage their husband’s (or fiancé’s) longevity and safety.

According to a survey, it is estimated that 67% of women keep karwa Chauth fast as an expression of deep love, while 25% do it out of tradition. The remaining 8% follows due to societal expectations. Still, Karwa Chauth is the perfect day to turn devotion into celebration.

As a loving wife, you may plan every detail — from heartfelt Karwa Chauth gifts to special rituals — to express your love and care. Yet, while the tradition carries deep emotional meaning, it’s equally essential to care for your health. Fasting isn’t suitable for everyone, and in certain cases, it can do more harm than good.

Who Should Abstain from Karwa ChauthFasting?

Here are some people who should avoid karwa chauth fasting as per experts:

Pregnant Women & Breastfeeding Moms

Karwa Chauth fasting for pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers

Pregnant women need plenty of water and balanced nutrition for themselves and their growing baby, which is why doctors usually do not recommend fasting. Some women also experience gestational diabetes, making fasting risky as maintaining blood sugar becomes challenging.

Similarly, breastfeeding mothers—especially with babies under six months who are solely breastfeeding—need to consider both their baby’s health and their own, as their body requires constant hydration and nutrition.

It is advisable to get yourself assessed and follow your doctor’s guidance before deciding to fast. If you are determined to fast, follow these tips to avoid complications:

During Sargi:

  • Eat protein- and fibre-rich meals to stay full for longer hours.
  • Drink plenty of water before sunrise to stay hydrated.
  • Take your folic acid and Vitamin D supplements, as they are essential.

Listen to Your Body:

If you experience dizziness, weakness, or feel something is not right, break your fast immediately and contact your doctor. Your health and your baby’s well-being come first.

After Moonrise:

  • Break your fast with plain water or fresh juice before eating solid food; avoid tea or coffee as they can cause dehydration.
  • Consume slow-release energy foods like oats, beans, pulses, and chapati to gradually restore energy.
  • Follow a balanced or light nourishing diet, including foods rich in protein, fibre, and healthy fats.

Individuals with Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart, and Kidney Problems

Fasting affects blood sugar levels. People with diabetes, especially those who take medicines to regulate their blood sugar level, must consult an expert before fasting.

Warning signs of low blood sugar:

  • Shakiness, sweating, or confusion
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Extreme hunger or irritability

Similarly, those having high blood pressure issues should either avoid fasting or take professional help, as fasting can lead to drops in blood pressure. Individuals with heart and kidney conditions should be cautious about their fluid intake. Fasting without water can exacerbate kidney issues.

People with Chronic Illness should avoid fasting

If you have a chronic illness such as cancer, autoimmune disorders, gastrointestinal problems (like peptic ulcers or gastritis), or mental health conditions like depression, stress, anxiety, or eating disorders, fasting may be risky. Your specific diet and nutrition requirements could be compromised, and fasting may interfere with your medications.

Karwa Chauth Fasting may aggravate certain gastrointestinal conditions and can be distressing for those with mental health concerns. Those who take medicines regularly should be cautious and follow professional guidance.

Elderly Women need to avoid fasting

Older people need specific dietary guidelines and they should adhere to them. Fasting could potentially worsen existing health problems and can lead to nutritional deficiencies. Whenever I think of elderly women, I remember my grandmother, who once fainted after fasting for an entire day. Things became critical at that time, but thankfully, her health improved after two days. My grandpa then advised her not to fast again so that she wouldn’t have to go through such an experience in the future.

The essence of Karwa Chauth fasting lies in love, care, and affection — not just for the husband, but also for oneself. Fasting must not come with challenges for your health. It is always recommended to talk with an expert if you’re having any health issues before starting your fast and follow the advice religiously. After all, both your husband and the divine already know how deeply you love and care.
